Cal Tennis to Honor Jan Brogan at 2008 Season Kickoff

BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's and women's tennis programs will join forces to kick off the 2008 season with exhibition play, dinner and a program honoring former women's head coach Jan Brogan at the Berkeley Tennis Club (One Tunnel Road, Berkeley, Calif. 94705) on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008. Both teams, on behalf of the Team Cal Tennis Committee invite you to join in welcoming new players and kicking off the new season. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for youth (17 and under) if ordered by Sept. 6. After Sept. 6 and at the door, ticket prices will be $60 for adults and $35 for youth. The evening's program will include exhibition by both Cal teams with a no-host bar from 4 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by a program honoring Jan Brogan, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
An eight-time conference coach of the year, Jan Brogan amassed more than 500 victories while guiding the California women's tennis program for 29 seasons. Her direction made the Golden Bears a perennial power, earning 19 Top-10 finishes and 26 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. In her final season, Cal finished the 2006-07 campaign with a 23-7 record, a trip to the NCAA semifinal and a No. 5 ranking.
Under her tutelage, the Bears had 61 All-Americans, 19 first-team All-Pac-10 players and five conference players of the year. Brogan-coached players have won four NCAA doubles championships and one NCAA singles crown, all since 1999. Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen teamed for doubles titles in 1999 and 2000, while Jensen partnered with Claire Curran for the 2001 championship, and Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano reached the victory stand in 2003. In 2006, Susie Babos swept through the field to become Cal's first women's NCAA Singles Champion.
Off the court, Cal players have also been named to the Pac-10 All-Academic squad on 27 occasions since 1994 and have been voted Academic All-Americans four times. Brogan's collegiate career record comes to rest at 539-223 (.707), fourth on the NCAA's all-time women's tennis victory list.
A successful teaching professional in Los Gatos, Calif. before taking Cal's head coaching job in 1978, Brogan has been a member of the ITA Board of Directors, ITA Operating Committee, NCAA Championship Tennis Committee and the ITA Sport Science Committee. Brogan graduated from San Jose State with a degree in physical education in 1978. In 1998, she completed a master's degree in sports psychology at John F. Kennedy University.
Honored as the 1990 ITA Coach of the Year; enshrined in the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007, Brogan is a true legacy at the University of California. Brogan's contributions to the Golden Bears are innumerable and she will long be remembered for all of her great accomplishments. Come celebrate coach Brogan's retirement with the friend's of Cal Tennis, the Team Cal Tennis Committee and the 2008-09 Cal Men's and Women's Tennis Teams.
