Jim Harbaugh Comments from Today's Stanford Football Media Luncheon
Sept. 2, 2008
Here's a sampling of some of head coach Jim Harbaugh's comments at today's Stanford football media luncheon as the Cardinal prepare to meet Arizona State Saturday night in Tempe.
On the Arizona State GameIt's a big game; we'll be going down to Tempe to play a real good team at their place. They have the most prolific quarterback in the Pac-10, good players at all the skill positions and a lot of speed defensively. We're going to have our hands full this week, and we need to prepare like it's a big contest.
I would put them (ASU) in the same category as USC, Oregon and Cal and after last night, UCLA. Oregon State and Arizona are right there, too. They are on an elite level in the Pac-10. They are physical, fast and well-coached. It's where we are trying to get to.
They (ASU) do a really good job in stretching the field vertically and horizontally. They have an experienced quarterback who throws to really good receivers.
On Preparing for Arizona StateWe'll have to prepare like we did for the Oregon State game. Everything we do we'll have to be at our best--the meeting time we get, the practice time, everything will have to be at our best to give us the best chance to compete with Arizona State.
On Tavita PritchardTavita did an excellent job running our football team (against Oregon State). He threw the football accurately, and led our team to victory. He did so many things positively, including his #1 job - to take care of the football.
On Toby GerhartToby is running like John Riggins. He's one of the premier backs in the Pac-10 and in the country after week one. He's a talented young man. He practiced really well all during camp and had some scrimmages that confirmed what I saw for a brief time last year before his injury. He has ability.
On Toby Gerhart and his brother, Garth, who is an offensive lineman at Arizona StateIt's really neat for the Gerhart family. How proud would you be to have one son playing in the Pac-10, much less two. They (Toby and Garth) come from a football family, a sports family. I can only imagine how proud their parents must be.
On the DefenseThey started real strong in the first quarter, with three and outs. Throughout the whole game, they were able to us the ball back. Officially, there were only three turnovers, but to me there were six: the fumble out of the end zone for a safety, we stopped them on fourth down, and we blocked a punt. From that standpoint, they were incredible.
All in all, a good performance from the defense, but we can be better.
