Toby Gerhart Named Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Sept. 2, 2008
Junior running back Toby Gerhart (Norco, CA/Norco HS) of the Cardinal football team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 25-31, 2008.
Gerhart ran for a career-high 147 yards on 19 carries (7.7 ypc) with two touchdowns to lead Stanford to a season-opening, 36-28 win over Oregon State in last Thursday night's nationally televised contest. The rushing total was the highest ever by a Stanford back in a season opener, and marked the Cardinal's most prolific ground game since J.R. Lemon ran for 162 yards against Washington in 2004. Gerhart's effort also tied for the 27th-best rushing total in school history, matching Mike Mitchell's output vs. USC in 1996. The Norco, Calif. native scored Stanford's first touchdown of the 2008 season on a 1-yard run with 9:11 remaining in the first half, then broke loose for a 46-yard scoring scamper that featured a trio of broken tackles.
Gerhart has now rushed for 247 yards on 31 carries (7.8 pc) with three touchdowns over his last two collegiate games dating back to last year's San Jose State game, when he rushed for 140 yards on 12 carries before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the third quarter.
This is Gerhart's first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the 2008 season. Stanford will look for its first 2-0 start in Pac-10 play since the 2001 season this Saturday night, when the Cardinal travels to Tempe for a meeting with the 15th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Sun Devil Stadium.
Also nominated: Jacob Riley (Men's Cross Country), Alicia Follmar (Women's Cross Country), Beth Ridley (Field Hockey), John Moore (Men's Soccer), Teresa Noyola (Women's Soccer) and Cynthia Barboza (Women's Volleyball)
