GolfWeek Ranks Bruins First and Third
Sept. 3, 2008
In preseason rankings released this week by GolfWeek magazine, the UCLA women's golf program captured the No.1 spot and the men's team was ranked No.3.
For the women's team, it marks the first time in three years the Bruins will begin the season as the nation's top-ranked team. Last week, the Bruins were ranked No.2 in the preseason coaches poll. In 2005, GolfWeek also ranked the Bruins No.1.
'We've got a pretty loaded roster, that's for sure,' said Carrie Forsyth, who enters her 10th season as head coach of the Bruins. 'I think the inherent challenge is keeping team chemistry and attitudes positive. There are going to be weeks where great players aren't traveling.'
The men's team, ranked No.1 last week in the coaches poll, begins the season ranked third by GolfWeek. The loss of two seniors from their national championship fivesome, dropped the Bruins below Georgia and Oklahoma State this fall.
'Being the defending champion is great, but there's still so much we want to accomplish,' said second-year head coach Derek Freeman. 'We're still building and establishing a foundation.'
The Bruins return six lettermen, and add five players from their recruiting class, which was ranked second nationally. Three of the newcomers are AJGA All-Americans.
