You've lived in a lot of different places. What has been your favorite?
I have lived in six different places: Rochester Hills, Michigan; Hong Kong, China; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Naperville, Illinois; Holland, Ohio; and Danville, California. Although I enjoyed living in some places more than others, I still think that each location had its perks, as I met some great people and experienced lots of interesting events. Hong Kong was particularly unique and I really enjoyed living there because of its diversity. My earliest memories are from Hong Kong! Moving from the Midwest to California has been quite the transition as well but I feel I have adjusted now--especially to the weather!
When did you start playing volleyball?
I started playing volleyball in the seventh grade for my middle school team. We weren't very experienced, so when my mom received a flyer for a Sports Performance clinic in the mail, all the girls signed up. The coaches for Sports Performance saw me play and asked me to play on their team. I've been hooked on volleyball ever since!
How would you spend a day with no school or volleyball?
Sleeping in would be my first priority on a day off from school and volleyball! After that, I would go out to dim sum with my friends and family to a great restaurant in my hometown. I also love to shop so a trip to the mall would most likely come next. If it was a nice day, I would love to go to the beach and hang out by the ocean. Due to my hectic athletic and academic schedule, it is extremely difficult to relax so relaxing on the beach with the ocean waves would be perfect!
What's your favorite vacation spot?
I love visiting Hawaii! When we lived in Hong Kong, my family used to stop for an extended layover in Hawaii when we would come back to visit family in the U.S. Ever since then, I love to go back. I went to Honolulu with my mom for a relaxing vacation a few years ago and we had a wonderful time, but things are a little different for me now. My mom and I definitely stood out among the crowds in Hawaii (we are both about 6'3') and everyone pointed at us and made comments in foreign languages to our faces. One night at dinner, I saw another tall girl across the room and we made a beeline for one another--since she was the only other person over about 5'6' I had seen the whole trip. She was a Canadian collegiate soccer player who shared my experience of the endless whispers and stares. We both agreed that we had never been stared at or talked about more in our lives! It was nice to laugh about it with another tall girl, but people stared at us even more together!
What's been your best memory so far with Stanford volleyball?
My best memory so far with Stanford volleyball is our trip to the Final Four last year. When I was choosing colleges, I focused on programs that had the potential to win a national championship, and Stanford was certainly at the top of that list! Coming so close to turning that dream into a reality my freshman year was unforgettable. Of course the championship did not turn out exactly how we intended it to, but I'm looking forward to these next few years where we can (knock on wood!) finally get a ring (or two)!
