Cross Country Begins 2008 Campaign On Saturday At UC Irvine Invitational
Sept. 4, 2008
The men's and women's cross country teams will kick off the 2008 season on Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational. The women will run in the 'A' race at 8:40 am, while the men will follow in the 'A' race at 9:10 am. Some of the teams slated to compete with UCLA include Fresno State, Cal Poly SLO, CSUN and UC Irvine.
'After being together for one week as a team, I'm excited about the level of fitness that several of the returning athletes in our program are demonstrating,' said head coach Eric Peterson. 'We're going to hold our three seniors (Laef Barnes, Mike Haddan and Drew Shackleton) out of this meet, but we're going to give all of our younger athletes a chance to gain experience and get an early test before we head off to our training camp.
'The women have also worked hard over the summer months and appear to be not only excited for the coming season, but enthusiastic about the opportunity to bounce back from the 2007 season,' added Peterson.
'We are extremely young with a relatively inexperienced group, but the most exciting aspect of what I'm seeing is a tremendous level of improvement from kids like Shannon Murakami, Kelcie Wiemann and Cobbie Jones. With the addition of talented and well-conditioned freshmen in Katja Goldring, Sadee Martinez and Taryn Pastoor, this team will look to have a strong showing this weekend.'
Also racing this weekend for the Bruins is Lauren Jirges.
