Sept. 5, 2008
SKILLMAN, N.J. - The season has yet to even begin but already the Washington men's tennis team received some positive news as senior Patrik Fischer and sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan were given career high singles rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason poll.
Fischer will enter the fall season ranked 56th in singles, a new high point for his career. The Switzerland native was UW's No. 1 singles player last season, going 22-13 overall and 13-9 in dual match play. He was named to the All-Pac-10 second team.
Nedunchezhiyan made an immediate impact in his first season, playing predominantly No. 2 singles, he posted a 19-14 record and was ranked as high as No. 82. Entering the fall, Nedunchezhiyan is ranked 74th by the ITA.
Washington will be counting on its two ranked players to help lead them back to the NCAA Championships, which it reached last spring for the 14th-straight season. Fall play begins Oct. 3 for the Huskies when they travel to Fresno, Calif. for the Bulldog Classic. That will be followed by the All-American Championships, the major individual tournament of the fall.
