No. 21 San Diego Improves To 5-0 Overall With 3-0 Sweep Of Oklahoma

LOS ANGELES - Amy DeGroot hit a match-high 25 kills, including 10 kills in the third set, as the No. 21 San Diego Toreros swept the Oklahoma Sooners, 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-22), in day two action at the 2008 Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational. USC improved to 5-0 overall and hit .333 for the match.
DeGroot, a junior outside hitter from Frenchtown, Mont., hit .385 in the match (25-5-52) with 11 digs, three block assists and one service ace. Ashton Basch had eight kills and hit .300 (8-2-20) while Jaimarie Sutherland and Jillian Wolpman added seven kills each. Jessica Nyrop had 42 assists with three kills and 11 digs for the Toreros.
Bridget Laplante and Caitlin Higgins had seven kills each for the Sooners (1-4) while setter Brianne Barker had 24 assists with four kills, 10 digs and four block assists.
San Diego pulled away in the first set after building an 8-6 lead. The Toreros scored five straight points for a 13-6 on their way to a 9-2 run. Bosch put down several thunderous kills as USD cruised to the 1-0 lead in the match.
Torey Ellick started set two with a kill for the Toreros, who started off with a 10-1 run to take charge early. DeGroot and Wolpman kept the Toreros ahead with back-to-back kills as USD finished the set with a 7-2 run for the 2-0 match advantage.
OU put up a fight in the third set. Trailing 13-12, the Sooners had a 4-1 run for a 16-14 lead. Sutherland answered the call with three straight kills for the Toreros, but another 4-1 Sooner run gave Oklahoma the 20-18 lead. Two kills from DeGroot put USD back on top as Oklahoma had to call a timeout, down 23-21. Wolpman recorded a kill for the 24th point, but Jackie Fotu staved off match point with a kill. DeGroot provided the poetic final point for the Toreros with the kill to give San Diego the victory.
The Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational continues tonight with USC hosting Hofstra at 7 p.m. The tournament will conclude tomorrow with Oklahoma and Hofstra at 4 p.m. with USC and San Diego playing at 6:30 p.m. Both USC matches will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
