No. 21 San Diego Sweeps Hofstra, 3-0, In Day Two Action
Sept. 5, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Amy DeGroot and Jaimarie Sutherland had 13 kills each Friday as the No. 21 San Diego Toreros swept the Hofstra Pride, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-22), in day two action at the 2008 Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational. Both DeGroot and Sutherland hit over .300 for the match.
Jessica Nyrop recorded 26 assists in the first two sets for the Toreros, who remain perfect on the season with a 4-0 record. USD outdug Hofstra by a 47-24 margin and hit .277 as a team for the match.
Harmonie Calinda led Hofstra (2-2) in kills with seven.
San Diego pulled away at the start of the first set as Ashton Basch's kill gave the Toreros a 16-9 lead. Jillian Wolpman, who had five kills and no errors, closed out the set as the Toreros hit .500 in the set (14-2-24). Both teams played to a 15-15 tie in the second set, but back-to-back kills from Basch and DeGroot pushed USD ahead for good. Hofstra got to within three, but San Diego used the 10-4 run to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite a 15-6 lead in the third set, the Pride got back into the match twice on Stephanie Killins' serve. Hofstra cut the deficit to one on Chrissey Cruz's kill, but Wolpman answered for the Toreros and a Pride attack error sealed the victory for San Diego.
The Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational continues today with San Diego playing at 5 p.m. against Oklahoma and USC hosting Hofstra at 7 p.m. The tournament will conclude tomorrow with Oklahoma and Hofstra at 4 p.m. with USC and San Diego playing at 6:30 p.m. Both USC matches will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
