GREENVILLE, S.C. - Led by a two-goal performance from freshman forward Brent Richards, Washington men's soccer blanked Furman, 4-0, to win the Diadora/Spinx Invitational in Greenville, S.C., Sunday.

It was the second-straight four-goal outing for the Huskies (2-2-0), who downed College of Charleston, 4-1, in the tournament opener on Friday. Richards (Camas, Wash.) scored twice in the first half, while senior midfielder George John (Shoreline, Wash.) and junior midfielder Jo Jo Katz (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added goals within a three-minute span in the second-half. With the loss, Furman fell to 1-2-0 on the season.

The Huskies swept top tournament honors as Richards was named the Offensive MVP and John the Defensive MVP. Freshmen Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) were tabbed to the all-tournament team as well.

'It was a magnificent, mature performance,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said of his team following the match. 'It was incredible how the guys came together and stuck to a game plan that really worked on the day. (Furman) played into our hands and pushed a lot of people forward, but we were very strong defensively and were able to counter and get at them quickly.'

Richards put Washington the board in just the ninth minute of the match when after receiving a pass from John, beat Furman goalkeeper Josh Zimmer to score his second career goal. Richards scored again in the 20th minute on a 10-yard shot assisted by senior midfielder Raphael Cox.

The Huskies extended their two-goal lead in the 66th minute on John's first goal of the year, a seven-yard shot that glanced off the crossbar and into the net. Back on the attack three minutes later, Katz sealed the win with his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from Daniel Phelps.

UW junior goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins earned the shutout, making one save. Zimmer grabbed two saves in goal for the Paladins. Furman ended up with an 11-8 advantage on shots, but the Huskies connected on four of their eight attempts on goal.

UW outscored its opponents 8-1 in the two tournament matches after struggling to score more than one goal in each of its first two games of the season at last weekend's Nike Portland Invitational.

'I can't say enough about what a different team we are compared to the first weekend,' Wurzberger said. 'The things that we know we are have started to show themselves. We're flying now, our season is back in the right direction.'

The Huskies will wrap up their five-game season-opening road trip at Portland, Friday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. The match will be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
