Cal Women's Golf Repeats as Champions of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic

Sept. 9, 2008

FORT COLLINS, COLO. -

For the second year in row the University of California women's golf team opened its fall schedule with a victory at the Ptarmigan Fall Classic, and for the second year in a row Shannon Yocum was the individual champion. The Golden Bears seem to enjoy playing at the 6,207-yard, par-72 Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo., finishing with an 18-under 846 (284-273-289), six strokes better than runner-up Colorado (283-279-290 - 852). Yocum came from behind to earn the medalist honors by shooting birdies in the last three holes, finishing with an eight-under 208 (71-67-70), edging Emily Childs of Colorado (71-67-71 - 209, - 7).

The Bears were also bolstered by the play of sophomore Pia Halbig, who finished fifth with a five-under 211 (69-70-72) and senior Allison Goodman, who tied for seventh with a three-under 213 (72-67-74). True freshman Angela Villela ended tied for 18th with a one-over 217 (73-69-75) and junior Roseanne Niven tied for 27th with a five-over 221 (72-76-73).

Yesterday (Sept. 8), Cal set a pair of school records as the team's 557 36-hole score broke the school record by 20 shots, surpassing the Bears' 577 shot at the 2003 Stanford Invitational. Cal's second 18 holes on Monday also broke a school record as the 273 score in the afternoon round broke the 282 shot by the Bears at the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Additional notables included Yocum and Goodman tying Sarah Huarte for the school record for a low round of 67. Huarte produced her 67 during her 2004 NCAA individual crown. Yocum captured the individual title at Ptarmigan Classic for the second year in a row after shooting a two-under 214 last season, and the Bears won the 2007 team title with a 868 (288-293-287).

'This (the Ptarmigan Country Club) is a good course for us and the fact that we had four players who had competed in the tournament last year was an advantage,' said Cal coach Nancy McDaniel. 'Plus, we have a freshman, Angela Villela, who really knows what she is doing. I think a key was everybody came back this fall ready to go after playing competitively this summer. We'll celebrate today, but then we'll get back to practice because we still have some things to work on. It was a completely impressive finish for Shannon (Yocum). She was up and down today, but ended up shooting an eagle on the 14th hole and birdied 16, 17 and 18 to come from behind for the victory. Shannon had an opportunity and took advantage of it. She played like a senior.'
