Cook, Munns Named Athletes of the Week
Sept. 10, 2008
Forward Sierra Cook (soccer) and linebacker Gerald Munns (football) have been chosen as the Arizona State University Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 14. Both were instrumental in leading their respective teams to victory over the weekend.
Cook tied for the team lead in shots (5) in ASU's 1-0 loss to TCU on Friday night. She also ignited ASU's offense in the Sun Devils' 4-0 win over Weber State on Sunday. After a scoreless first half, she came out and scored two goals (the first and second of her collegiate career) in an 11-minute span to give ASU a commanding 2-0 lead. The freshman powerhouse capped off the win over Weber State by assisting on the first goal of teammate Erica Long's Sun Devil career. Her five points, two goals and eight shots against Weber State tied the single-game high of any Pac-10 player in all three categories this season.
Munns, who was wearing a cast for a broken finger, didn't let injury stop him from leading the ASU defense in limiting Stanford to 233 yards of total offense in the Sun Devils' 41-17 victory on Saturday. He intercepted a pass on the Cardinal's opening possession of the second half, which was the first of three turnovers ASU forced in the win, and it led to a touchdown that put the Sun Devils ahead 27-10. He also deflected a pass in the fourth quarter that was intercepted by safety Troy Nolan. For this impressive effort he was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week.
