Golden Bears Open Strong at Land Rover Napa Valley Classic

The California men's tennis team got the 2008 individual tournament season off to a good start today at the Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic at Meadowood in St. Helena, Calif. The Golden Bears nabbed eight victories in singles play and two more in doubles facing players from Harvard and Illinois.
Sophomore Jonathan Dahan teamed up with newcomer Nick Andrews to get an 8-4 win over Abe Souza and Waylon Chin of Illinois while sophomore Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Thai Tu got a win over Harvard's Alistair Felton and Tim Wu by the same score, 8-4. Coming out on the losing side, senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini came away with an 8-6 defeat at the hands of Dennis Nevolo and Ruan Roelosfe of Illinois. Senior Eoin Heavey and junior Kallim Stewart also fell in doubles play, registering an 8-4 loss to Billy Heiser and Connor Roth of Illinois.
In singles play, the Bears got eight wins, three coming from freshmen. Tu got a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Jordan Knue of Illinois while Heavey took a 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 win against Heiser. Stewart also came out on top in his match, snatching a three-set win from Roelosfe, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(8). Andrews fought for the tiebreaker in his first set and then cruised in the second to defeat Chin 7-6(5), 6-2.
Katsarov got his win in two sets over Roth, 6-4, 6-1 and Zerbini dropped a 6-3, 6-1 victory on Souza. Chizever, in rare singles form, got a win over Felton, 6-4, 6-3 and freshman Evan Rose took a 6-4, 6-2 win against Wu. A couple of Bears didn't fare quite as well in singles play however as Dahan retired after suffering an injury while down 5-2 in the first set. Newcomer Sky Lovill fell in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Harvard's Mike Kalfayan.
The Bears continue round-robin play tomorrow with matches beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at approximately 5 p.m. Admission to the 2008 Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic is complimentary.
