Portland Posts Comeback Victory Over UW, 3-1
Sept. 12, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. - UW freshman forward Brent Richards scored for Washington in the 13th minute, but the Huskies surrendered three unanswered goals to fall to Portland, 3-1, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Merlo Field, Friday evening.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Huskies (2-3-0) who had also won the last two meetings with Portland in the series between these Northwest rivals. In turn, the Pilots snapped a two-game losing streak with the comeback win, improving to 2-2-1.
After Richards' goal in the opening minutes, the Huskies looked to have the upper hand early. But Portland found the equalizer on an own goal just seconds before halftime, then built on its momentum with second-half scores from Leland Wright and Frankie Lopez within a eight-minute span to come back for the victory.
The Huskies struck early with Richards' team-leading fourth goal of the season. The freshman forward received a through ball from fellow rookie Dylan Tucker-Gangnes and nailed a shot from the top of the box that soared past Portland goalkeeper Austin Guerrero.
UW, which seemed to have much of the momentum during the opening 45 minutes, had a solid chance to take a two-nil lead when a hard shot from senior midfielder Raphael Cox was saved by Guerrero.
It looked as if that momentum would take UW through halftime, but Portland evened the score on an unorthodox play at 44:33. The Pilots launched a free kick that hit off the heads of two Husky defenders and found its way into the net during a scramble in front of the goal.
Like the Huskies held the upper hand in the first-half, the tides quickly changed in the second-half. Wright scored the gamewinner for Portland in the 53rd minute and then in the 61st minute, Lopez launched a 20-yard shot past UW goalkeeper Stephen Fung to pad the Pilot lead.
UW threatened late with offensive pressure on corner kicks, but wasn't able to convert any goals. It was quite a change for the Huskies who had tallied a combined eight goals in their previous two matches.
Fung allowed all three goals and made two saves, one in each half. Guerrero also grabbed two saves for the Pilots.
Friday's match marked the end of a five-game season-opening road trip for Washington. UW will now return to Seattle to make its official home debut hosting the Husky Fever Classic, Sept. 19 and 21. The Huskies will face Cal State Fullerton and New Mexico. Portland will round out the four-team field.
