Top-Ranked UCLA Dominates No. 25 UConn, 3-0
Sept. 12, 2008
Storrs, Conn. - Top-ranked UCLA had little trouble with No. 25 Connecticut on Friday evening, posting the team's fourth straight shutout en route to a 3-0 victory over the Huskies at the UConn Classic.
UCLA (5-0) got off to a quick start with a goal less than five minutes in. Freshman Sydney Leroux took advantage of a pass from Kara Lang right in front of the goal, tapping the ball in for the first score of the game.
That was all of the scoring action that would occur during the first half, as both teams had a few scoring opportunities, however neither team was able to find the back of the net.
UCLA came out firing in the second half scoring two goals within a minute of each other. Christina DiMartino dribbled around several UConn defenders, eventually scoring on an unassisted goal at 51:13 mark. Just a little more than a minute later (52:25) Leroux scored her second goal of the game and her third of the year to put the Bruins up by three.
Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson played the first 72 minutes, making three saves. Freshman Yiana Dimmitt closed out the match, making two saves of her own. The Bruins outshot the Huskies, 22-10 on the evening.
UCLA rounds out play at the UConn Classic on Sunday, taking on Brown at Noon (EST).
