UCLA Baseball Receives Grant-in-Aid From Hart's Trevor Bauer
Sept. 12, 2008
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball program has received a signed grant-in-aid form from high school senior Trevor Bauer, a right-handed pitcher at Hart High School (Newhall, Calif.), as announced by head coach John Savage. Bauer, who compiled a 12-0 record and a 0.79 ERA as a junior in 2008, will graduate high school in December before enrolling at UCLA in January.
Bauer earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I honors and first-team All-Southern Section accolades from the California Baseball Coaches Association (CBCA) following a junior season in which he logged 106 strikeouts, 15 walks and two saves in 70.2 innings. Bauer and incoming freshman Gerrit Cole were the only two pitchers selected to the 2008 Los Angeles Times High School All-Star Team and were two of seven pitchers named first-team all-state baseball selections by CalHiSports.com.
'Trevor is an outstanding pitching prospect who will be able to compete right away as a freshman,' Savage said. 'We believe that Trevor and Gerrit were the two best high school right-handers in southern California last season. Trevor's season at Hart last spring was as good as any pitcher in the state. We are looking forward to having Trevor play a major role in our program for several years.'
In June 2008, Bauer was invited to the Team USA 18-and-under Tournament of Stars trials, an eight-team, seven-day tournament in Cary, N.C. After throwing 10 shutout innings at the Tournament of Stars, Bauer was invited to compete in Phoenix for a spot on the under-18 U.S. National Team.
A native of Valencia, Calif., Bauer tossed six complete games - including four shutouts - as a junior. Among his most impressive performances included a 16-strikeout effort in a 2-0 shutout against West Torrance and a two-hit, 10-strikeout shutout versus Canyon. Bauer helped Hart High School secure the 2008 Foothill League title, en route to a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
Bauer, listed at 6-feet-1 and 175 pounds, was promoted from the junior varsity squad to the varsity team as a sophomore. That spring, the right-hander logged a 4-1 record and compiled a 2.07 ERA in 23.2 innings, recording 25 strikeouts and five walks with the varsity team. In the postseason, Bauer was the winning pitcher in Hart's CIF Division I postseason victory over Newbury Park, allowing one run and five hits in six innings.
