ASU Women's Soccer Faces No. 7 Texas on Sunday
Sept. 13, 2008
The Arizona State women's soccer team continues its trip to Texas on Sunday (1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT) when it travels to Austin, Texas, to take on the No. 7 Texas Longhorns.
The Sun Devils (3-2-1) have won their last two games with their most recent triumph coming via a 1-0 decision at Baylor on Friday night. Senior Carla Scanniello knocked in her first goal of the season 11 minutes into the game and the Sun Devil defense would make the lead stand for the rest of the game. ASU outshot the Bears 7-3 while not allowing a single shot on goal.
Texas has won all five of its contests this season, outscoring its opponents by a combined 13-2. In their most recent outing the Longhorns escaped with a 2-1double overtime win over Arizona, which extended their school record home winning streak to 19 games. The Longhorns were originally scheduled to host the University Houston on Friday night. The game would eventually be cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Ike, which affected Houston's ability to travel to Austin.
'We have some challenges Sunday and one of them is we are playing a team that [had its game cancelled],' said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. 'So now we are going to have to face a fresh opponent on its home turf. We are going to keep focused on doing our thing. If we bring our character out and play the way we are trying to play and we continue the defense we saw [against Baylor] then we could make it very difficult for them.'
The only prior meeting between Texas and ASU came last season when the Longhorns defeated the Sun Devils 1-0 in Tempe. The Sun Devils lost despite holding a 9-5 advantage in shots. Longhorn forward Niki Arlitt scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 52nd minute.
Sunday's game will mark the conclusion of a three-week span in which the Sun Devils played five of their first seven games of the season on the road. Next Friday's game against CSU Northridge will be the first of seven consecutive contests that ASU will play at home.
