Lee Finishes In Top 5
Sept. 14, 2008
WAYZATA - Minn. -- In just his first tournament as a Husky, junior Richard Lee placed tied for fifth.
'I'm really excited for Richard,' said Huskies coach Matt Thurmond. 'He was just rock solid all day from fairway to green. Finishing in the top five is something that most people don't do in their whole collegiate career and he did it in his first shot.'
Richard finished the Gopher Invitational with a final-round 71, which was good enough to move him ahead nine spots from the previous day. It was Lee's second 71 in three days at the Spring Hill Golf Club. He stumbled on the second day with a 74.
As a team, Washington followed Lee's example, moving up two spots in the overall competition to place third with a combined score of 879 after three days. Texas and Louisiana State Universities shared the team title, finishing the tournament in 872 strokes apiece.
'It was a good day for us,' Thurmond said. 'We passed a couple of schools and although we didn't quite get up there with the top two, we got pretty close.'
The Huskies had three players finish inside the top 20. Joining Lee were junior Nick Taylor (16th) and sophomore Tze Huang Choo (20th). The Huskies had a rough second day at the tournament on Saturday, posting a 297 and dropping two spots into fifth place.
'That was one thing we have been talking about early this season: finishing rounds,' Thurmond said. 'We had a strong beginning (on Saturday) and couldn't maintain. Today everybody was dropping shots and we were able to keep going and get a couple more spots.
'This finish makes me very excited for upcoming events,' Thurmond said. '(As a team) we shot the best round on the day by four strokes and we didn't even have our best player playing well.'
The Huskies final day 290 beat all other teams in a rain-filled day. Coming up for the Dawgs is the Husky Invitational Sept. 29 and 30 at Gold Mountain Golf Course.
