Stewart Claims Norma Miner Award as Men's Tennis Concludes Napa Valley Tennis Classic

ST. HELENA, Calif. -
The California men's tennis team concluded competition at the 2008 Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic at Meadowood in St. Helena, Calif. today, getting five more singles wins and two victories in doubles competition. Junior Kallim Stewart became the first Golden Bear player to receive the Norma Miner Award, for the Outstanding Player of the Napa Valley Tennis Classic. Stewart (ranked No. 64 in the preseason ITA rankings) won all three of his singles matches including a big 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against the ITA preseason No. 12-ranked Nate Schnugg of Georgia.
Cal freshman Nick Andrews also got an upset win over No. 109-ranked Christian Vitulli of Georgia, 6-2, 6-2. Fellow freshmen Thai Tu and Evan Rose also got wins on the final day of play. Tu got his over Harvard's Michael Hayes, 6-2, 6-2. Rose took a 6-3, 6-3 win over Illinois' Waylon Chin. Sophomore Pedro Zerbini also added a win against Georgia's No. 71-ranked Javier Garrapiz in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, Rose teamed up with sophomore Bozhidar Katsarov to get an 8-6 win against Harvard's Alistair Felton and Mike Kalfayan. On the next court over, Tu joined freshman Sky Lovill to get an 8-4 win against Liinus Hietaniemi and Tim Wu from Harvard.
