Starting with this opening installment, sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe will be providing a bi-weekly look into her day-to-day life as a member of the Arizona women's basketball team. Her first entry talks about the first few weeks of school and the rigors of pre-season workouts.
Hey!! I'm Ifunanya Ibekwe, but everyone just calls me Ify.
Where do I start? Hmm...
Well, it's been a long, hard three weeks with double workouts, individuals, classes, team pickup and study hall. Our bodies are sore and tired and we still have to find time to eat a proper meal and get proper rest. But, that's why I love being a Wildcat: knowing that I am giving my call to my teammates, coaches and myself on and off the court and also being around people that care about each other.
School started on August 25th and on August 26th we all were working out as a team. From then until now, we have come a long way, both on our own and becoming a team. We had days where we all were struggling, but we had each other's back and encouraged each other. That pushed us through and made us closer.
The wonderful McKale Center is seriously my second home. I go there for everything: to see our trainer, workouts, study hall, to shoot by myself or to hang out with my other athlete friends from different sports. It is fun having McKale as a place to go to because the atmosphere is overwhelming. It makes you feel at home and from time to time, I just sit in the stands and think about any and everything.
Being in the 3rd week of school is kind of hard. I have to learn how to manage my time and when I can do certain things. Schools comes first, so I make sure my homework is done before I plan to do anything else. I am taking four classes this semester. One that I like but also dislike is my Spanish class. I like that I'm learning something new and taking this Spanish course will benefit me in the long run, BUT I am not a big fan of spelling or saying words right. However, I do have a Spanish tutor to help me on the things I do understand.
Overall, I've been on my 'A' game and starting to stay focused on and off the court.
