Pac-10 Football Players of the Week
Sept. 15, 2008
Walnut Creek, Calif. -
Quarterback Mark Sanchez and linebacker Rey Maualuga of USC and place kicker Matt Evensen of Oregon have been named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.
Sanchez and Maualuga played key roles in top-ranked USC's decisive 35-3 win over then-No. 5-ranked Ohio State. Sanchez, a junior from Mission Viejo, Calif., threw four touchdown passes while completing 17 of 28 passes (.607) for 172 yards. Sanchez connected on scoring passes covering 35, 1, 17 and 24 yards. It marks the second time in as many games Sanchez has been selected for Pac-10 offensive honors.
Maualuga, a senior from Eureka, Calif., returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown and also posted five tackles. The USC defense kept Ohio State out of the end zone and limited the Buckeyes to 207 yards total offense (71 rushing, 136 passing), picked off two passes and posted five quarterback sacks.
Evensen, a senior from Portland, Ore., played a critical role in Oregon's 32-26 double-overtime road win at Purdue. Despite very windy conditions, Evensen was perfect of four field goal attempts, connecting from 23, 21, 38 and 33 yards. The 38-yarder in the fourth quarter tied the game and the 31-yarder came in the first overtime. Evensen also connected on his only two PAT attempts and recorded three touchbacks on his five kickoffs.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs LeGarrette Blount of Oregon and Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State, wide receiver Mike Thomas of Arizona and quarterback Kevin Riley of California. Also nominated on defense were safety Greg Laybourn of Oregon State, end Will Tukuafu of Oregon and linebackers Pat Maynor of Stanford, Reggie Carter of UCLA and Zack Follett of California. Mark Mueller of Stanford was nominated for special teams play.
