Another Bruin Shutout
Sept. 19, 2008
LOS ANGELES -The second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team picked up its sixth straight shutout on Friday, registering a 3-0 victory over Miami in the first match of the UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium. The Bruins (6-0-1), who haven't allowed a goal since the season opener against UC Santa Barbara, have outscored their opponents 19-1 through the first seven matches.
Senior midfielder Christina DiMartino notched her first multiple-goal performance of the year, scoring the Bruins' first two goals of the match. Her first strike, just before halftime (39:19), came on a ball sent up from junior Lauren Cheney. DiMartino was able to control the ball with her shoulder before rifling a right-footed shot to the far post from about 15 yards out. DiMartino and Cheney hooked up again for UCLA's second goal at the 51:23 mark. This time Cheney crossed the ball across the top of the box to DiMartino, who curled in a perfect shot to the top-left corner.
Sophomore Kylie Wright capped the scoring for the Bruins with the first goal of her career in the 88th minute. After freshman Sydney Leroux had a shot blocked toward the top of the box, the ball bounced to Wright, who was positioned near the top left corner. She hit a right-footed ball to the far post for the Bruins' third goal of the match.
Junior Kristina Larsen almost got in on the scoring in the 58th minute, as she made a brilliant run through the box before hitting a header off the post. Miami's best chance at a goal came at the 54:56 mark when Brittney Steinbruch hit the crossbar on a shot. The ball bounced back into play and Julianne Rickers had an open header, however the ball sailed just wide.
UCLA played its two goalkeepers for the fourth straight match, with senior Ashley Thompson getting the start before being relieved by freshman Yiana Dimmitt in the 62nd minute. Each player made one save on the day. The Bruins outshot Miami, 27-5 for the match.
UCLA will round out the weekend against New Mexico on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The first match that day features No. 24 San Diego against Miami.
