Cal Softball Begins Fall Exhibition Play on Sunday

Berkeley - The California Golden Bear softball team opens its fall preseason schedule on Sunday, Sept. 28 vs. Stanislaus at 1:00 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
Cal, which ended the 2008 season with a 43-27 record, an appearance in the NCAA Super Regional and a No. 14 final ranking plays eight exhibition games plus a tournament in Stockton, Oct. 4-5.
The Bears reached 40-plus wins for the ninth time since 1999 and advanced to the NCAA postseason for the 23rd straight time in 2008. Cal won the Fresno Regional and advanced to their its Super Regional since 2005, and gave the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators all they could handle before bowing out in Gainesville in their best-of-three series.
The Bears have a pair of notable returnees, including sophomore Valerie Arioto, who was a boost for the Bears in 2008, leading the team in batting average (.324), runs (55), hits (71) and doubles (17) to earn All-Pac-10 and All-Pacific Region honors. Junior hurler Marissa Drewrey won 29 games in the circle with over 300 strikeouts en route to all-conference and all-region accolades as well last season. Cal set a team record with 279 RBI as well.
Cal also has a highly touted freshmen class this season, including Frani Echavarria, Elia Reid and Jamia Reid. Both Reid twins posted the two highest SPARQ scores in March in a group of over 300 girls from over 26 high school teams from California, Arizona and Nevada.
SPARQ, which stands for Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction and Quickness, is essentially a useful measurement for players to use to gauge their individual athletic training progress while serving as an evaluation took for college coaches and many players are preparing for the testing by participating in SPARQ Training.
