No. 19 Cal Runs at Stanford Invitational This Week

No. 19 California has a big test this week as it heads to Stanford for the 35th annual Stanford Invitational Saturday, Sept. 27, on the Stanford Golf Course. The men's 8K race starts at 10:50 a.m., followed by the women's 6K event at 11:15 a.m. The Golden Bears hope to keep the momentum going after recording back-to-back top-five finishes in its previous two meets.
Last Time Out
The Cal men came in fourth while the women took fifth at the Sacramento State Jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Granite Regional Park in Sacramento, Calif. The Cal men finished with 83 points and the Cal women finished with 97 points.
Senior Eric Lee paced the Cal men by placing sixth (20:15). Fellow senior Sean Carey also grabbed a top-10 placing, touring the course in 20:32 and finishing in 10th.
In the women's competition, the Golden Bears placed two runners in the top 15. Senior Rebecca Palm placed eighth (17:59), while freshman Taylor Dutch took 15th (18:23).
The Bears' Lineup
Cal's lineup for the women's 6K race features Alison Greggor, Taylor Dutch, Araceli Huerta, Michelle Davis, Debra Maier, Crystal Esparza, Rowena Tam, Keena Kohl, Gabriela Rios-Sotelo, Herdis Arnalds and Rebecca Palm. The runners for the Bears' men's team are Mark Matusak, Yosef Ghebray, Kari Karlsson, Sean Carey, Michael Coe, Eric Lee, Patrick Lynch, Matt Kelley Miller, Steve Sodaro, Matt Hansdavid Miller and Nate Beach.
Last Year's Stanford Invitational
At last year's Stanford Invitational, the Cal men's team took second with 66 points. Highlighting the Bears' strong finish was David Torrence who placed third at 23:25. He was one of four runners from the men's team to finish in the top 15. The Cal women finished eighth with 231 points.
After Torrence, the other three top runners were Mark Matusak and Yosef Ghebray and Michael Coe. Matusak took 10th, touring the course in 23:55. Ghebray and Coe were right behind him in 11th and 12th, respectively.
Rebecca Yau led the Cal women by placing 12th in a time of 21:17. Chelsea Reilly made her collegiate debut and took 37th place (22:04).
Bears Ranked Regionally and Nationally
The Cal men's team is ranked fourth, while the women are ranked 12th in the west region of the USTFCCCA's Preseason Division I Men's and Women's Regional Cross Country rankings. The Cal men are also ranked 19th in the USTFCCCA preseason national poll.
In the men's poll, Cal was third among Pac-10 squads, with Oregon topping the chart at No. 1 and Stanford coming in at No. 3. During the 2007 season, the Bears reached their highest national ranking ever of No. 8.
Four Pac-10 schools came in the top five in the women's preseason regional poll, and Cal was seventh out of the Pac-10 teams listed. The Bears have started their season on a positive note, claiming first at the USF Invitational on Aug. 30.
Cal returns to action Oct. 18 when the Bears will be participating in two meets - the Pre-NCAA meet and the Bronco Classic. The Pre-NCAA meet is a good preview of the competition that Cal expects to see at the NCAA regionals and the national championships.
