Sanders Grabs First Top 10 Finish of WSU Career

Sept. 23, 2008

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State Men's golf team was led by freshman Trent Sanders, who grabbed the first top 10 finish of his young WSU career.

Sanders posted a final-round score of 72 (E) to move up two places in the final round. The freshman opened with a first-round score of 74 (+2), and shot 67 (-5) in the second round. He finished with a total of 213 (-3), placing him in a tie for fourth place.

Junior Nick Grigsby and sophomore Nick Ellis each finished in the top 25. Ellis shot a three-round total of 214 (-2), finishing in a tie for 12th. Grigsby posted a final-round 76 (+4), finishing in a tie for 14th place. Grigsby was the tournament leader entering the final round.

'Trent, Ellis and Grigsby had a very solid tournament,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

Austin Hurt carded a 218 (+2), and Kevin Tucker wrapped up the Cougar scorers with a 220 (+4).

Monday the Cougars shot a second-round 275 (-13), the third-lowest single-round score in school history, putting them in a tie for first coming into the last round of play. After shooting a third-round score of 294 the men finished with a final team score of 859 (-5), and in sole possession of fourth, one stroke ahead of conference foe Oregon.

'Very difficult pin locations and a lot of three-putts and even several four-putts was the result,' said Williams. 'It's hard to keep your composure when you hit what you think are good shots and then you get up on the greens and make bogeys anyway.'

Next up for the Cougars is the Husky Invitational Sept. 29, in Bremerton, Wash.
