Women's Tennis Opens Fall Hosting Cal Nike Invitational

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team opens the fall individual tournament season this weekend (Sept. 26-28) by hosting the 2008 Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. Play begins at approximately 8 a.m. on each day and will conclude at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, semifinal and final rounds will be played, with matches concluding at approximately 4 p.m.
Three Golden Bears received preseason rankings in the ITA women's division I singles rankings, led by sophomore Marina Cossou who holds the No. 7 ranking among 125 listed players. Seniors No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas and No. 65 Bojana Bobusic also begin the fall ranked. As a pair, Cossou and Ilcinkas hold the No. 24-ranking among doubles teams.
Including the Bears, this weekend's tournament could feature 19 singles players ranked in the ITA preseason rankings and eight ranked doubles teams from Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Minnesota, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and UC Davis.
Ranked singles players potentially competing this weekend include: No. 7 Marina Cossou (Cal), No. 12 Melanie Gloria (Fresno State), No. 16 Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State), No. 19 Nadia Abdala (Arizona State), No. 20 Kelcy McKenna (Arizona State), No. 21 Katrina Zheltova (Sacramento State), No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas (Cal), No. 26 Danielle Steinberg (Arizona), No. 62 Jenni Heinser (San Francisco), No. 64 Hannah Grady (Long Beach State), No. 65 Bojana Bobusic (Cal), No. 86 Tinesta Rowe (Fresno State), No. 96 Kristina Doerr (BYU), and No. 112 Jessica Hoath (St. Mary's).
Ranked doubles teams potentially competing this weekend include: No. 1 Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe (Fresno State), No. 8 Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State), No. 13 Laila Abdala and Nadia Abdala (Arizona State), No. 22 Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas (Cal), No. 32 Danielle Steinberg and Claire Rietsch (Arizona), No. 41 Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein (Arizona State), and No. 44 Hannah Grady and Anais Dallara (Long Beach State).
In last year's Invitational, Ilcinkas defeated Bobusic to take the Blue Flight singles title in a close 7-6(9), 6-4 match. Then-freshman Bobbie Englert also advanced to a final, facing Courtney Hull of Santa Clara in the White Flight, but falling in three sets. Then-senior Susie Babos advanced to the Gold Flight semifinal before falling to Georgia Rose of Northwestern. In doubles play, then-seniors Cristina Visico and Stephanie Kusano also made a splash in the Gold Flight bracket by advancing to the semifinal round.
