ASU Heads To Ohio For The Ping/Golfweek Preview

Sept. 25, 2008

The Sun Devil men's golf team heads to Toledo, Ohio this Sunday to compete in the Ping/Golfweek Preview. The tournament, now in its 20th season, is held each year at the golf course slated to host the NCAA Championship. This year the 54-hole event is being hosted by the University of Toledo at the Inverness Golf Club. This historic club has a par-71 7,255-yard layout and has hosted many big tournaments including four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships and a U.S. Amateur.

ASU (9/12) is up against a tough field including No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Southern Cal, No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Clemson, No. 8 Florida State, No. 10 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 12 Chattanooga, No. 19 Charlotte, No. 22 Tennessee and No. 25 Kent State. Oklahoma State has appeared in all 19 Previews with Arizona State, Clemson and Florida ranking second in appearances with 17. The Cowboys, Sun Devils and Tigers are tied for first in Preview wins with three apiece. ASU won the event in 1991, 1992, and 1995 with Darren Angel winning the individual title in 1995.

The Sun Devils will start a young lineup once again this week, as only one of the five players is an upperclassman. The lineup includes: freshman Scott Pinckney (Anthem, Ariz.), sophomore Jesper Kennegard (Klippan, Sweden), Stephan Gross (Leimen, Germany), freshman Chan Kim (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior Braxton Marquez (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Last weekend at Olympia Fields, ASU captured a sixth place finish while freshman Scott Pinckney shot a career best 67 in the second round. Pinckney finished tied for seventh and looks to continue his success this weekend.

ASU last won the Ping Preview in the fall of 1995 on their way to the 1996 NCAA Championship under current coach Randy Lein. The tournament begins Sunday at noon eastern time and runs through Tuesday. The tournament will be live at golfstat.com.
