GymDawgs Journal - Karen Cain
Sept. 25, 2008
Hey Dawg Fans!
WOW! I can't believe that preseason has begun and summer is coming to an end. Everyone is so excited to be back and we have an amazing team chemistry this year. The new freshmen will add so much to our team in both a gymnastics skill sense and also on a personal level as well. It is so strange for me to watch them in the gym and think that a whole year has past since I was in their shoes. They are ALL handling college in such a mature way. It is not always an easy adjustment to go from high school to college. Despite the home sickness, the adjustment to living on their own, college-level academics and a new training environment, they always come in with a great attitude and willingness to learn and improve for the team.
To help us get to know each other, we have had several team activities. Last week we rented canoes on campus and rowed out on Lake Washington. The beautiful weather provided us an opportunity to get to know our teammates better. Another activity that was really fun was our team hike. We all packed up headed out to Snow Lake! The hike was challenging enough to bring us together as a team but the awesome views and beautiful lake served a a good motivator. Then, to top it all off, we got a tour of Seattle from a seaplane. The seaplanes were so fun and the views of the sound and mountains were stunning. We are so lucky to live in an area with such wonderful outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing!
Practice has been going very well. We are all focusing on keeping the energy in the gym high as we work through some preseason soreness. I want to recognize our top dawgs from the last two weeks, Ashley Houghting and Ruby Engrietz. They have led 'the pack' in terms of attitude and effort. Really the whole team is doing a great job with their attitude and effort. I am confident that if we keep this level of training up we are well on our way to nationals.
Thank You to all of our fans for your support. We can't wait until meet season when we can show you all how hard we have worked.
