The No. 2 USC men's golf team, which finished third at the 2008 NCAA Championships, begins its 2008-2009 fall schedule at the 20th annual Ping/Golfweek Preview, hosted by the University of Toledo, Sunday through Tuesday (Sept. 28-30), at the Inverness C.C.
The 15-team field features many of the top programs in the country, including Alabama, Arizona State, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Oklahoma State, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Toledo.
The tournament, host of the 2009 NCAA championship final, will consist of 18 holes each day, beginning with a shotgun start off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 12 p.m. EDT. USC begins play with Georgia and Oklahoma State off the first tee at 12:50 p.m. EDT.
Live results are available at Golfstat.com. USC, under third-year coach Chris Zambri, will be trying to extend a streak of finishing in the top four of 11 consecutive tournaments. Troy has also finished in the top 3 in five straight events, a streak that includes three team titles.
USC's lineup in its season-opening tournament includes two-time All-American first teamer Jamie Lovemark, senior Tom Glissmeyer and sophomore Tim Sluiter (both 2008 All-American honorable mention picks), senior Ryan Linton and sophomore Bo DeHuff.
Lovemark finished in the top 16 in all but one tournament in 2008, though he is looking for his first win since taking the 2007 NCAA Championships individual title.
Glissmeyer posted six top 16 finishes as a 2008 junior and posted three consecutive top six finishes late in the year, including tying for sixth at both the Pac-10 and NCAA Regional Championships.
Sluiter had six top 14 finishes and four in the top as a 2008 freshman, including a tie for ninth at the 2008 NCAA Championships (where he was USC's top finisher). He also won the individual title at the 2008 USC Collegiate Invitational.
Linton played in two tournaments as a 2008 junior, his best finish a tie for 20th at the USC Collegiate Invitational. DeHuff played in three events as a 2008 redshirt sophomore, posting a pair of ties for 50th and one 71st.
