Bears Get Back on Track with Win over Dons
Sept. 26, 2008
BERKELEY - In its final non-conference match of the regular season, No. 6 California got back on its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over San Francisco Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The hard-fought contest was in a scoreless tie until the Golden Bears scored two late goals to earn the win. Cal improved its record to 5-2-1.
Sophomore forward Andrew Wiedeman, the Bears' leading scorer thus far, got the Bears on the board first with a score in the 71st minute. After a shot bounced off the crossbar, Wiedeman was able to tuck the rebound just underneath the crossbar. The goal gave Wiedeman 10 points on the season (3 goals, 4 assists), and was also his second game-winning goal of the year.
Almost four minutes later, Cal all but sealed the victory when they were able to force an own goal by USF (1-5-1).
Junior goalkeeper Stefan Frei was perfect once again, garnering another shutout. Frei made five saves en route to earning his third shutout of the campaign and the 14th of his career. Frei was tested by USF, as the Dons outshot the Bears, 12-8, in addition to the five shots on goal.
Cal heads to the Pacific Northwest to open Pac-10 play next weekend. The Bears will battle Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. and Washington on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. Cal returns to Edwards Stadium on Oct. 10 for a clash with UCLA.
