Huskies Shutout Utah, 3-0, To Improve To 8-1
Sept. 26, 2008
SEATTLE - Junior Veronica Perez scored her seventh goal of the season and added an assist, leading the University of Washington women's soccer team to a 3-0 win Friday over Utah at Husky Soccer Field.
The victory gives Washington an 8-1-0 record, equaling the best nine-game start in program history. Utah fell to 3-6-2.
Perez (San Mateo, Calif.) continued to be the catalyst for the Huskies, notching her fourth game-winning goal of the season. She got the Huskies on the board in the 28th minute, heading in a shot from inside the box off a corner kick from sophomore Kelly Joswick (Placentia, Calif.).
UW struck again under a minute later when McKenna Waitley (El Cajon, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season, sending a shot into the top left corner of the net after Alex Kirk's (Edmonds, Wash.) shot was blocked by Utah goalkeeper Emalee Rogers. The assist was Kirk's team-leading fifth of the season.
The score remained 2-0 until the 57th minute when Perez sent in a corner kick toward the goal which Joswick headed in for her second goal of the season.
The Huskies bounced back strong Friday after suffering their first loss of the season last weekend, a 3-0 setback to then-No. 23 Illinois. Husky head coach Lesle Gallimore was pleased with how the team turned the tables on the Utes, who defeated UW, 3-2, last season.
'That was a fun game. It was good to see us put together a full 90 minutes,' Gallimore said. 'You love to see the shutout, you love to see three goals and you love to see goals on restarts. I was really pleased with the performance of people off the bench. Our starting group did an outstanding job but Chelsea Bumbaugh came in as well as Nikki Murray and when they came in we didn't skip a beat. I thought we had a lot of really good performances from a lot of different people tonight. The energy was great.'
UW dominated possession throughout the entire match, keeping Utah without a shot until midway through the second half. The Huskies out-shot the Utes, 12-0, in the first half and 19-3 for the game. They also held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Phillips made two saves for the Huskies and recorded her fourth shutout. She improved to 7-1 on the season.
'(Utah) is dangerous going forward and they're quick but we didn't let them get a lot of shots from a distance and they are good at striking the ball from a distance,' Gallimore said. 'Alex Phillips did a good job coming off her line and I also thought we did a good job of not giving up too many restarts. It was definitely the most complete game we've played all year.'
Perez led the Huskies with five shots while Waitley took three.
The Huskies continue their home stand Sunday when they play Hawai'i at Noon at Husky Soccer Field.
