Wildcats fall to No. 9 Washington in five sets
Sept. 27, 2008
The Arizona volleyball team (11-2, 1-1) gave No. 9 Washington all it could handle, but fell to the Huskies 3-2 at McKale Center Saturday night.
Playing their first ranked opponent of the season, the Wildcats fell 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 26-28 and 15-8.
'I liked the way we competed,' said head coach Dave Rubio. 'We are a young team that will continue to improved.'
With the score tied at 21 in the fourth set, the Wildcats got a big block out of sophomores Whitney Dosty and Stephanie Snow to pull ahead and the Wildcats battled back and fourth with Washington before pushing the match to a fifth set. However, errors doomed Arizona with four unforced errors to open the fifth set and they could never recover.
'We showed a lot of resilience to be able to fight back especially after being down 2-1 and down basically the entire fourth game,' Rubio said. 'I would have liked to see less mistakes on our part in the fifth game.'
In all, Arizona had 27 attack errors on a season-high 163 attempts and 11 service errors.
The Huskies helped the Wildcats with 20 service errors and 29 attack errors, but the Wildcats were the team that hurt it self in the fifth set.
The Wildcats go right back to action Wednesday night when they host in-state rival Arizona State at 7:00 p.m. in the McKale Center.
'We can't dwell on this match,' Buringrud said. ' We need to move on.'
