Catching Up With Coach J

Sept. 30, 2008

Hello Husky Fans -
The first day of school is an exciting adventure for the eight new additions to our Husky family. It also means that preseason practice and conditioning sessions are officially underway! The staff and team are ready to begin serious work toward our goals.

The Staff...
It's good to be home! It's great to travel the country (and sometimes the world) looking for talent to bring to UW, but there's nothing better than being home in beautiful Seattle. My staff and I spent most of the last month in the office writing letters and making phone calls to future Husky basketball players. Now we are in the mode of doing home visits and selling potential Huskies on our prestigious university, our illustrious city, and the new era of Washington basketball.

During this transition between summer recruiting and home visits, the staff got the opportunity to treat some of our fans at the Storm/Comets game. We had an excellent turn-out at our second annual fan appreciation night! A group of over 50 Husky fans congregated on the concourse to hear about the upcoming season. Many more stopped by our booth to pick up this season's schedule, season ticket information, and vouchers for free admission to two of our home games. During the game my staff and I enjoyed the company of our Fast Break Board in a Key Arena suite overlooking the court. It was a fun way to show our appreciation for their insurmountable dedication and support for our program! To become a Fast Break member, please follow this link

The Team...
In September both the newcomers and returners had the opportunity to visit with family and friends one last time before fall workouts got underway. They are now rejuvenated and ready to hit the court running!

September 15th marked an exciting day in Husky Basketball as we had our first official team workout-- the 'Iron Woman Challenge!' The team was divided into three groups that competed in a series of fun, challenging fitness tests. It allowed coaches to identify leaders, while at the same time defining the character of each one of our Huskies. What a way to start the year!!

Amidst the workouts the team still finds time to go out and support our fellow Huskies. With several of the fall sports already underway, Husky basketball has cheered on their colleagues at volleyball and football home competitions, just to name a few. Upperclassmen have taught freshmen 'Bow Down to Washington' and other traditions that make Husky athletics so great!

In the Community...
Children's Hospital and Husky Basketball have teamed up giving our players an opportunity to touch the lives of those in need. Starting this month and continuing each month throughout the year, the team will visit the play room at the hospital. Our players will interact with patients and the patient's family, playing games, doing arts and crafts, or whatever is asked of us. This service is very much appreciated by the families, the hospital, as well as the Huskies. I am so proud of our young ladies for wanting to make a difference in the lives of others.

GO DAWGS!!
