Chan Goes 1-1 At All-American Tourney
Sept. 30, 2008
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Husky sophomore Venise Chan got her 2008-09 season off to a rousing start with a win over a Top-50 player in the qualifying draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the first major tournament of the fall. However, Chan dropped a three-setter later in the day, the decisive set being her sixth overall on day one.
Coming into the season ranked 28th in singles, Chan was the 5th-seed in the 64-player qualifying draw, which feeds eight players into the main draw of the tournament, which functions as the first of three 'majors' in college tennis.
Chan fell behind a set in her morning match against 47th-ranked Nina Much-Soeggard of TCU but improved with each set, rallying back to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Just a few hours later, Chan was back on court, this time against Miami's Bianca Eichkorn, who is ranked 109th in the preseason poll. Eichkorn took the first set, 6-2, before Chan turned the tables with a 6-3 second set victory. Eichkorn, however, was able to profit from the fact that she won in straight sets in her first match while Chan was in her second third set of the day. The final tally favored Eichkorn, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Chan and the rest of the Husky women's team will be in action next on October 10 for the three-day St. Mary's Invite in Moraga, Calif.
