Golden Bears Disappointed at All-American Qualifier
Sept. 30, 2008
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 65-ranked California women's tennis senior Bojana Bobusic was eliminated from play today at the All-American Championship Qualifier held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Bobusic faced No. 32 Maya Johansson of UCLA and fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Golden Bears are not eliminated from competition in the singles main draw however, as senior No. 22 Claire Ilcinkas and sophomore No. 7 Marina Cossou have already qualified by virtue of their selections as All-Americans last season.
In the doubles qualifier, the No. 22 ranked duo of Cossou and Ilcinkas also did not fare well, falling, 8-5 to William and Mary's No. 20-ranked doubles team of Ragini Achraya and Katarina Zoricic. Cal does not have another doubles team in the All-American Championships.
The All-American Main Draw competition begins on Thursday, Oct. 2 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 5 for both singles and doubles participants.
The Bears have experienced major success at the All-American Championship in recent years with Susie Babos claiming the singles title the past two years, to become only the fourth player ever to repeat in back-to-back years as the champion.
