Meet The Cardinal: Cassidy Lichtman
Oct. 1, 2008
Primarily a defensive specialist last season, sophomore Cassidy Lichtman has taken on a new role as a setter/hitter, and so far has put up impressive numbers in the new spot. The Poway, Calif. native was named to the all-tournament team at two of Stanford's preseason tournaments and has already recorded five double-doubles, including a near triple-double against No. 3 Texas. Cassidy has also set new personal bests for kills (10), assists (31), aces (4), blocks (3) and hitting percentage (.533). Last weekend against the Oregon schools, she turned in 10 kills, 53 assists and 12 digs.
How would you spend a day with no school or volleyball?
I don't know that that's ever happened. I think the first thing I would do is sleep in and then find ways to waste the first half of the day. Then I would probably call Janet and we would go to Yumi Yogurt and have a Friends marathon.
What was the best advice you ever received?
When I was eleven, I had a club coach named Danielle Lamb. One of her rules for our team was that you could never say, 'I can't.' I think that was the point in my life where I really realized that I could do whatever I wanted as long as I was willing to work for it.
When did you start playing volleyball? Did you have a volleyball idol growing up?
I started playing club volleyball when I was ten, but my mom coaches and my older brother plays so I was in the gym well before that. My first volleyball memory was from when I was probably about four years old and my brother and I would go to the gym with my mom while her team practiced. I used to pass the ball to myself and against the wall for hours at a time. There was a team three years ahead of me at my volleyball club who I really looked up to. They just played really well together as a team and I really respected that. My freshman year in high school I got to play with them for a tournament and it was one of the best experiences of my club career. Stefani Saragosa was another one of my volleyball idols. She played at my high school when I was about nine years old. I watched her win a state championship and decided that I wanted to do that too.
What are you NOT good at?
I'm not good at doing my hair. (Actually I've never really tried, but I don't think I would be very good at it).
What's been your best memory so far with Stanford volleyball?
A lot of my best memories come from the locker room before games. One of the best times I remember was sitting in Minnesota listening to Foluke and Janet sing with their iPods on full blast. It's one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed.
