Team Travels to All-American Championships

TUCSON--The Arizona men's tennis team sends five players to the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. this weekend. Arizona will compete against some of the top collegiate players in the country in both singles and doubles draws.

Juniors Pat Metham and Ravid Hazi, who are participating in their first fall tournament of the year, will begin pre-qualifying rounds Friday. Sophomores Andres Carrasco and Jay Goldman and freshman Jason Zafiros will all compete starting Sunday in the Main Draw.

'This is a good opportunity for our guys to play some of the top college players in the country,' head coach Tad Berkowitz said. 'All fall we have stressed the importance of gaining college experience and the All-American Championships is no better place to achieve that.'

Competing in this year's tournament is number one ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State. Also highlighting this year's men's field and rounding out the ITA men's singles preseason rankings (in order): Denes Lukacs of Baylor, Daniel Vallverdu of Miami (Fla.), Alex Clayton of Stanford, Robert Farah of USC, Arnau Brugues of Tulsa, Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas, Justin Kronauge and Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State and J.P. Smith of Tennessee.

The All-American Championships start today October 3, 2008 and will conclude on October 12, 2008.

NOTES:

Past men's All-American participants include current professional stars such as recent U.S. Open quarterfinalist James Blake (in 1998 as a sophomore at Harvard) and Bob and Mike Bryan (in 1997 as sophomores at Stanford), the world's top-ranked doubles team.
