Kelcy McKenna Topples Top Seed En Route to Semifinals of the ITA All-Americans
Oct. 3, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - Kelcy McKenna's seven match win streak continued on Friday afternoon as she collected two wins in the Main Draw Singles Bracket of the ITA All-American Championships, one over top-seeded Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas. The two wins place McKenna in the semifinal round to be played tomorrow in Los Angeles.
McKenna started off the day as strong as she finished it as she went into Friday's match-ups slated against the tournament's top seed, Aurelija Miseviciute, who is also the ITA's pre-season #1 player. While McKenna was able to walk away with a straight sets win, the match was a gritty one to the end with Miseviciute hanging on at every point before Kelcy was just able to supercede the Lady Back and win 7-6(4), 7-6(4).
After the tough match-up McKenna wasn't done for the day though as she stepped up to take on Miami's 14th-ranked Laura Valverdu in the quarterfinal round. McKenna cruised through the first set, coming out strong to take a 6-2 win before Valverdu battled back in the second. In the end, McKenna was too much for the Hurricane though squeezing another 7-6 win to seal the deal in straight sets again and advance.
Kelcy will now gear up for the semifinal round to be played tomorrow at 10 a.m. She will face the winner of the #3 Amanda McDowell (Georgia Tech) and #6 Maria Mosolova (Northwestern) match-up currently going on.
