Oct. 6, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. - Following a solid opening round score that gave #24-ranked Arizona the team lead, the Wildcats struggled in round two for the second-straight tournament and currently sit in 4th place at the Windy City Collegiate Championships, Monday afternoon at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
Arizona shares 4th place with TCU, who shot opposite scores of the Wildcats on the day to achieve an identical tworound total of 603 (+27). Purdue leads the event at 591 while Michigan finished at 599 and Oklahoma at 602.
Freshman Isabelle Boineau, who was making her varsity debut with the Wildcats, got things going in impressive fashion as she stayed at even par through the first 14 holes. Though she hit a stretch of three-straight bogeys, she rolled in a birdie on the 18th hole to cap her first round at +2 (74).
The Wildcats led Michigan by three strokes after the first 18 holes while both Purdue and Oklahoma sat four strokes back at 301. After shooting just nine over par as a group in the first round, the Wildcats quickly eclipsed that number as the second round got underway.
The lead was gone before any of the team made the turn to the back nine. While the scoring foursome was a collective even par on the front nine in the first round, their score climbed to +7 on the first set of holes with all five players carding bogeys on the 8th hole.
Three Arizona players each shot +4 rounds of 76 in the second set of holes on the day as the team finished at 306 to match its two-round total from its opening event, the Mason Rudolph Championships in Franklin, Tenn. Boineau opened her second round with back-to-back birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes before finishing at 76 to share the team lead with Ramos at +6 (150).
Amanda Wilson also had two birdies in her second round and managed to conquer the difficult par-3 17th hole to finish the day one shot behind her teammates at 151. Brittany Benvenuto steadied her play during her final nine holes after shooting 42 on the front nine of her second round and completed the day at 152 while Nikki Koller came in at +13 (157).
Junthima Gulyanamitta of Purdue holds the individual lead at 6-under after she carded identical rounds of 69. Ellen Mueller of Oklahoma was the only other player to finish 36 holes under par after finishing at 143 (-1).
