Meet The Cardinal: Jessica Fishburn
Oct. 8, 2008
Jessica Fishburn is a senior defensive specialist from Los Angeles, Calif. Over the course of the last three and a half seasons, Fishburn has seen significant time on the court and proven her ability to be a dependable passer for Stanford. In 2006, she posted some of the best single-season dig numbers in school history. So far in 2008, she has appeared in 38 sets and been made an impact in key situations in the back row.
Your dad was a pretty good beach player, right? What impact has he had on your career?
My dad, Andy Fishburn, is an incredible volleyball player. He played at Stanford and secured a spot in the Hall of Fame (it's a little odd because I look exactly like him in that picture!). Pops also played professionally on the beach (when beach volleyball wasn't an Olympic sport). While on the circuit, he was a two-time world champion - pretty crazy, huh? I had the opportunity to watch him play only a couple of times when I was very little, but I still beg him to watch videos of old tournaments. He's so crafty! I began playing volleyball on the beach when I was very young, and I learned all I know from him. He's still (and will always be) my favorite partner on the beach. Following in his footsteps has been unbelievably fulfilling! I hope to play beach volleyball after I graduate - I know he'll make a wonderful coach.
Anything you're 'addicted to' or spend a lot of time doing?
I must admit that I'm completely addicted to the show 'House'. I only started watching it at the beginning of preseason, but I finished three seasons in a matter of 1 month! I love doctor shows! However, this one's a bit different than other ones I've watched before (e.g. Grey's Anatomy). Yes, the show has beautiful people and drama, but it also delves into the medical stuff more than other shows (so I can actually learn something!). It's phenomenal! You should watch it...
How did you spend your summer?
This past summer I had the opportunity to intern with a dermatologist in the Los Angeles area. I've always been interested in this field, and I learned so much from working with her. I got to see all kinds of procedures and examinations - it was fascinating! Considering that I want to go into medicine, this experience was invaluable to me (and I got to wear scrubs everyday, just like the people on 'House').
What's been the best vacation you've ever taken?
I've had some really incredible vacations! My two favorites were Fiji and Bora Bora. I'm a beach bum, and I love tropical places, so these vacations were amazing! I went to Fiji with my mom for my 18th birthday. We stayed at the Wakaya Club, which was unreal - the food, the people, the scenery! We also met a local guy there who took us out on his yacht to celebrate my birthday! Bora Bora was amazing as well, and I went with my whole family (mom, dad, and brother). Besides lounging and exploring, we all went parasailing! The people who took us out had the longest rope in the world - I couldn't believe the view!
