Women's Tennis Opens Fall At St. Mary's Invite
Oct. 9, 2008
THIS WEEK: Eight members of the Washington women's tennis team will begin their 2008-09 seasons this weekend at the SMC Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's College. The tournament begins Friday, Oct. 10 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Korth Tennis Complex.
Competition should be strong at the tournament, which features players from 14 institutions, including Pac-10 foes Stanford and California, as well as northwest rivals Portland, Gonzaga, and Boise State. Eight Huskies are spread amongst three singles flights, and two doubles teams will play in the top doubles draw.
The top singles draw, referred to as the Red draw, features five Huskies including all three of UW's newcomers. Freshman Denise Dy (San Jose, Calif.) is the No. 5 seed in the draw, and is joined by junior Joyce Ardies (Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior Aleksandra Malovic (Apeldoorn, Netherlands), freshman Samantha Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.), and sophomore Lina Xu (Shanghai, China), a transfer from Jacksonville University.
Four of the 32 players in the top draw appear in the ITA preseason singles rankings, led by top-seed Jenni Heinser of San Francisco, who is ranked 62nd. Ardies will face Heinser in the first round on Friday.
In the White bracket, sophomores Vanja Radunovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) and Aleksandra Krsljanin (Belgrade, Serbia) are entered, while junior Lauren Summers (Edmonds, Wash.) will take part in the Blue draw.
In the 14-team main doubles draw, Malovic and Radunovic are paired together as they were for much of the 2008 dual season, while Ardies and Xu play their first match together.
Play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. each morning.
