Women's Tennis Opens Play At Saint Mary's Invitational

STANFORD, Calif.- Three Stanford players advanced in the red bracket on the opening day of play at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Friday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
Sophomores Carolyn McVeigh and Jennifer Yen, seeded Nos. 2 and 5 respectively, cruised to first round wins. McVeigh downed Boise State's Klaudia Wlodarczk 6-2, 6-2 while Yen topped San Jose State's Amber Silverstone 7-5, 6-1.
Freshman Courtney Clayton, tabbed the No. 8 seed, defeated Herzyl Legaspi of UC Davis 6-1, 6-1. Fellow rookie Logan Hansen suffered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Boise State's Lauren Megale in her first match.
McVeigh, Yen and Clayton advance to Saturday's round of 16 while Hansen moves into the consolation draw.
In doubles action, McVeigh and Hansen teamed up to defeat UC Davis' Desiree Stone and Randi Schuler 8-6 following an opening-round bye.
Clayton and Yen fell to Sacramento State's Clarisse Baca and Gayane Sarkisian 8-4, but rebounded with an 8-4 win over Portland's Megan Sporndli and Stephanie Fuchs in the consolation round.
