Freshman Samantha Smith Wins Twice More At SMC
Oct. 11, 2008
MORAGA, Calif. - It was an up and down day for the Husky women's tennis team at the SMC Invitational, held at the Korth Tennis Complex at St. Mary's College. Freshman Samantha Smith won twice to reach the semifinals of the 'White' singles bracket.
Smith, a freshman from Los Angeles, has yet to drop a set in three matches playing in the No. 2 singles draw. She took out Dahra Zamudio of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-1 in the first match of the day, then defeated Lais Ogata of Nevada, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Smith is the last Husky remaining in the winners portion of the draws, but several Huskies had great days in consolation play. Junior Joyce Ardies had an easy time in her two matches in the consolation draw of the Red singles bracket. She needed only to win the first two games before Aglaya Kokurina of Gonzaga retired due to injury. Then Ardies lost only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Portland's Megan Sporndli.
Sophomore Lina Xu, a transfer from Jacksonville, also won twice in the Red consolation draw. She downed Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State, 7-5, 6-0, for her first Husky victory, then brushed aside Pacific's Jolanta Twarowska, 6-1, 6-4. Xu and Ardies will hope to meet each other in the final if they can each win their first match on Sunday.
In the winners half of the Red draw, fourth-seeded freshman Denise Dy suffered her first defeat, losing to Boise State's Lauren Megale, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Aleksandra Malovic also lost in the Round of 16, 6-0, 6-4, to Stanford's Courtney Clayton.
Elsewhere, sophomore Aleksandra Krsljanin was eliminated from the White main draw in a tight match with Svenja Arens of Pacific. Arens walked off with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Sophomore Vanja Radunovic was defeated in the consolation draw, and UW's two remaining doubles teams--Ardies and Xu, and Krsljanin and Smith--both were upended.
Junior Lauren Summers twice went to third set super-tiebreaks today, experiencing the highs and lows of the 10-point third set substitute. Summers outlasted Nevada's Shannon Cassidy, 12-10, in the super-tiebreak in her first match of the day. Against Jenna Kappel of UC Davis, Summers came back to send the match to the tiebreak with a 6-1 second set win, but this time was on the losing end, 10 points to eight.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with Smith, Ardies, and Xu playing their respective semifinal matches. An additional consolation round robin will be played Sunday, which may include some Washington players.
