Meet the Newcomers: Samantha Smith
Oct. 13, 2008
The Husky women's tennis team welcomes three new faces this season, two freshmen and one sophomore transfer. In the first of three Q&A's, freshman Samantha Smith talks about the always challenging transition to college life and what brought her to Washington. Shortly after the interview, Smith captured the White Singles Flight at the SMC Invitational, winning five matches over three days.
GoHuskies.com: So for how long now have you been in Seattle?
Samantha Smith: 'I moved up here about a week and a half before school started, just so I could get situated and move in and my mom came and stayed for a few days.'
GH: Are you enjoying the new living situation?
SS: 'Yeah, I'm in the dorms. I was a little shocked when I saw mine, but I'm getting used to it. I have a really great roommate so I'm really happy.'
GH: How is it going getting used to balancing school with tennis?
SS: 'Now the homework is piling up with a lot of reading right now. Balancing the training with the education is an adjustment. But I'm just doing my best and it'll come together I think.'
GH: How do you like your classes so far?
SS: I'm really happy with my classes. I switched out of one. Drama was just not my thing. But I'm in women's studies, and American ethnic history, then I have a general studies class.
GH: So what told you that Washington was the right fit for you?
SS: 'I really liked the school. I didn't at first realize all the walking I would have to do, but it's fine. I really liked the team. That really did it for me. I got along with all of them, and I really liked the coaches, so that really convinced me. I see that they're hard workers. I've visited other schools and it's just not the same. I could see that they worked really hard and I like that.'
GH: How would you describe your style of play?
SS: 'I think I have an all-court game. I can play at the net and I can play at the baseline.'
GH: What was your junior tennis experience like? Did you play much around the country or internationally?
SS: 'I haven't actually done a lot of traveling. I went to everything in driving distance. I went to two ITF's, one in North Carolina, I forget where the other one was. But I basically just played in tournaments in Southern California. Whatever tournament you name, I was there, so that's basically it.'
GH: You'll get to play your first non-Husky opponents this weekend, what are your thoughts on the St. Mary's tournament?
SS: 'I just am hoping to do well, and I want to play my best. I'm going to do my part and I know everyone else is going to do their part and I think it will all come together. I'm just hoping for the best and I think we'll do well.'
Note: Smith turned in a great performance at St. Mary's, winning her singles bracket without dropping a set.
