Cal Prepares for Tough Test This Week at Pre-NCAAs

This Week
The California cross country team is in the midst of a busy week, as it prepares for two competitions this weekend - the Pre-NCAA meet and the Bronco Invitational. The Pre-NCAA meet will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 8 a.m. (PT) in Terre Haute, Ind., while the Bronco Invitational will start at 9 a.m.

In the Rankings
The Cal men are currently ranked No. 25 in the nation and No. 6 in the west region, while the Cal women are ranked No. 12 in the west region.

Last Time Out
The California men's cross country team took second with 87 points on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the 35th-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Highlighting Cal's strong finish was senior Yosef Ghebray, who placed sixth at 24:28. He was one of three runners from the men's team to finish in the top 15. The Golden Bear women finished fourth with 191 points. This was the second year in a row that the Cal men took second.
After Ghebray, the other two top runners were senior Mark Matusak and sophomore Kari Karlsson. Matusak took seventh, touring the course in 24:30. Karlsson crossed the finish line at 24:55, taking 15th overall. Senior Matt Kelley Miller recorded a top-25 finish, clocking a time of 25:15 (22nd).
Freshman Keena Kohl led the Bears by placing 23rd in a time of 22:05 on the 6K course. Gabriela Rios-Sotelo wasn't very far behind, coming in 26th at 22:09.

The Bears' Lineup
Cal's lineup at the Pre-NCAA meet for the women's race features Alison Greggor, Debra Maier, Crystal Esparza, Rowena Tam, Keena Kohl, Gabriela Rios-Sotelo and Rebecca Palm. The runners for the Bears' men's team are Mark Matusak, Yosef Ghebray, Kari Karlsson, Michael Coe, Matt Kelley Miller, Matt Hansdavid Miller, and Steve Sodaro.Competing at the Bronco Invitational for the Cal women will be Taylor Dutch, Herdis Arnalds, Araceli Huerta and Michelle Davis. The lineup for the men's team features Nate Beach, Eric Lee, Dan Brown, Patrick Lynch, Maxime Chevee and Brad Surh.

Last Year's Pre-NCAA Meet
The men's team took third with 157 points in the blue race at last year's Pre-NCAA meet in Terre Haute, Ind. Four Bears from the men's team finished in the top 30. The Cal women finished 30th with 792 points.
David Torrence paced the Bears, taking 16th place with a time of 23:39. The other three top runners were Michael Coe, Mark Matusak and Yosef Ghebray. Coe took 17th, touring the course in 23:40. Ghebray and Matusak finished in 23rd and 27th, respectively.
Rebecca Yau led the Bears by placing 83rd in a time of 21:31. Chelsea Reilly came in 139th place (22:07).

Next Time
Cal has a week off as it will prepare for the Pac-10 Championships on Friday, Oct. 31, at 2:15 p.m. in Springfield, Ore. The Golden Bears look to put together a strong showing at the conference meet which preludes the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 15.
