Pre-Nationals Provide Opportunity, Challenge for Cross Country

PULLMAN, Wash:The Washington State University cross country teams travel to Terre Haute, Indiana. Saturday, Oct. 18, for competition at the Brooks Pre-Nationals Invitational...another group of Cougar runners will compete at the Cascade Conference Preview at Lincoln Park at Seattle, Washington.
THE PRE-NATIONALS: The meet takes place at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind., at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course which is mainly grass and is rolling and challenging...men's and women's races are divided into two seeded sections, Blue and White, that have the teams divided equally to ensure top competition in each race...6,000m women's races will begin at 11 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. ET...men's 8,000m races will follow at 12:10 p.m. and 12:50 p.m. ET...for more information and results, visit www.gosycamores.com.
DRAKE'S TAKE ON PRE-NATIONALS: 'I am excited to see both teams compete at the Pre-National meet in Indiana,' WSU Head Coach Jason Drake said. 'On the men's side there are 32 of the top 37 teams in the country, and 29 of the top 38 in the country on the women's side. This meet is a fantastic measuring stick to see where we stack up on the national scene.'
COUGAR CROSS COUNTRY CONVERSATION WITH COACH DRAKE: Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake will conduct a brief meeting with all Cougar Cross Country family and friends in attendance at each competition this season. The meet and greet for the Brooks Pre-National Meet will begin at 10 a.m. and Coach Drake will be at the Washington State team tent to talk over what he's looking for from the team at this meet and answer questions about Cougar Cross Country teams.
WSU WOMEN: Washington State will be represented by seven runners at the Pre-Nationals meet...juniors Sara Trané, Chelsea VanDeBrake, Lisa Egami and Marisa Sandoval lead the Cougars...also competing in Indiana are sophomore Amanda Andrews and freshmen Michelly Foley and Emily Farrar...sophomores Stephanie Sipes and Ashlee Wall and freshmen Mietra Smollack and Sarah Dunn will head to Seattle for the Cascade Conference Preview.
WSU MEN: Representing WSU this weekend will be senior captain Drew Polley and senior Evan Blanshan along with juniors Sam Ahlbeck, Dominic Smargiassi, and Mark Moeller...also competing will be freshmen Jono Lafler and Justin Englund... sophomores David Hickerson, Luke Lemenager, Peter Miller and Jeremy Swenson will also travel to Seattle, for the Cascade Conference Preview.
INJURY UPDATE: WSU junior Dan Geib has suffered a stress fracture to his femur and will miss the remainder of the cross country season.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: In the Oct. 13, 2008, USTFCCCA Division I West Region polls the men's team is ranked 8th and the women's team is ranked 11th.
NEXT COMPETITION: WSU takes a week off before heading to Corvallis, Oregon, to compete in the Pac-10 Championships Oct. 31.
