Second-Round Rally Keeps Men's Golf in 7th Place after Day One at The Prestige

Oct. 13, 2008

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Seeking to build on a fall campaign that has resulted in three top-three finishes, the California men's golf program ended its first two rounds on day one of The Prestige in seventh place within the 16-team field, rebounding from a difficult opening round in blustery conditions to get back in contention, led by Eric Mina's 1-under second round for a tie 10th individual finish after 36 holes.

Mina leads the Golden Bears with an opening day 77-71 (-1), finishing his two rounds with a birdie on the 18th hole to culminate a 4-birdie second-round that saw him leap from 17th to a tie 10th place in the event. Next-best for the Bears was Michael Jensen with his vault from 38th to 19th place with a consistent day of 72-72 golf (T19th), followed by John Murphy's 72-74 (+4, T47) and George Gandranata's 72-76 (+4, T26th). Stephen Hale ended his day +5 with a 72-77 (T69th).

The Bears showed their resiliency on a weather-affected day that saw some unusual scores, with UC Davis' Eric Davis shooting an 86 followed by a 63 second round as an example of the adverse early-round setting. Cal delivered a much better second round after a a gut-wrenching opening to keep itself in contention.

'That tells you just how crazy a day it was on a very quirky golf course,' head coach Steve Desimone said of his team. 'You love that kind of attitude. We've alway held our spot or moved forward. And we're not backing up tomorrow. That's the goal.'

'We started making a couple of putts and started making a couple of birdies, and once we got going this afternoon, it looked like what we've seen all fall. We've inched our way into seventh and I don't see any reason why we can't crawl up a few more spots. I'm realy proud of the way our kids fought back.'

Texas Christian (+7) leads The Prestige after Monday's action, followed by co-hosts UC Davis (+10) and Stanford (+13), Pepperdine (+22), UCF (+22) and Michigan (+26). The Bears stand seventh at +29.

The event concludes with the final round on Tuesday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m., with Cal beginning its round at the eighth hole.
