UW Men Respond After Sub-Par First Day

Oct. 14, 2008

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The Husky men's golf team shook off 36 holes of high scores on Tuesday by shooting a tournament low 276 to move from 11th place in the standings to finish fifth at The Prestige at PGA West.

'It was a great day today,' said UW head coach Matt Thurmond. 'Out of our three tournaments, we have been able to finish strong with either the best or one of the best rounds of the tournament.'

Leading the charge on Tuesday was junior Chris Killmer, who shot an 8-under 64 to move up 49 spots and finish in a tie for 20th place. The Huskies' best finisher was junior Richard Lee (76-72-72-219), who finished 10th -- his third consecutive finish in the top 10 this season.

'What I'm really excited about is how Chris Killmer shot two bad rounds on the first day, and so did Jens Bracht, but they fought back and played very well on the last day,' Thurmond said. 'That goes for Kevin Spooner too. He had a bad first round yesterday and fought out of it. That is hard to do -- usually in golf, you go from bad to worse, but these guys are going from bad to good.'

Winning the tournament was TCU, which finished as the only team under par with a 3-under 861. There was a tie for medalist between UC Davis' Nate Pistacchio and TCU's Johan de Beer, each shooting a 210 over three rounds.

Earlier this year, the Huskies shot a 290 during the final round of the Gopher Invitational to help them climb to third. And at the Husky Invitational Sept. 29-30, the Dawgs separated themselves from the competition by shooting a 292 on the final day to win their first tournament in three years.

'Coming into the desert always takes an adjustment for us,' Thurmond said. 'It helps when you get a guy who shoots 8-under, but I'm happy for all of our guys. We were able to talk about the course at the hotel and make adjustments and that showed.'

The UW men travel to San Martin, Calif. to play in the CordeValle Collegiate Nov. 13.
