Meet The Cardinal: Katherine Knox

Oct. 15, 2008

Katherine Knox is a freshman defensive specialist from Menlo Park, Calif. She graduated from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose last year, and led her team to back-to-back appearances in the state title match. So far at Stanford, she has made appearances against William & Mary and Oregon State, and dropped in an ace on her first collegiate serve.

Being from the Bay Area, were you a Stanford fan growing up?

Both of my parents are Stanford alums, and they have always been huge supporters of athletics here ever since they were in school. My mom was on the tennis team and my dad helped out in the athletic department. Ever since I was little, I have been coming to Stanford football and men's basketball games, and once in a while I'd come to a women's volleyball match. I vaguely remember watching Kristin Folkl, Kerri Walsh and Logan Tom, but completely honestly I was more interested in becoming a dolly. In my dorm room I have a framed poster from 1999 signed by Kerri Walsh, Logan Tom and their teammates, and it has been the weirdest experience to sign the same posters for other younger girls. I never really saw Stanford as an option when I was younger because I never really planned on staying so close to home, but as the years have passed I have realized that there is no better school in the world, especially now that I am here!!

How did you spend your summer?

I spent a lot of my summer mentally preparing myself for the big changes that were about to occur in my life. I worked a little at a local gym, helping out the head fitness trainer with organization and publicity, but I spent the majority of my time with my close friends from high school. I love reading so I of course always had a book in my hand, maybe on the beach in Santa Cruz or with my best friend Jen at the pool. In addition to daily conditioning, Jen and I took up yoga, which I would absolutely do every day if I wasn't sooooooooo busy. I spent a lot of time in the sun with friends and family, and I have learned to value quality outdoor time. During our annual trip to Sunriver, Oregon this year, my family took a half-day long float down the Deschutes River. Enjoying the company and the sunshine, I realized how strong my family support system is and important they have been to my successes. Although most people would tell me I'm a baby for being homesick, I miss my family so much! I just wish there were more hours in the day!

How would you spend a day with no school or volleyball?

As a freshman, my favorite thing to do on my off days is to hang out with my brand new friends and get to know each other, and campus, even better. I would love to just hang out in the sun and talk with the girls, do some reading, and maybe some drawing, or something else I never seem to have time for. Stanford is an amazing place because everyone is so accomplished and has something so remarkable to bring to the table, and I enjoy just talking to the people around me. After just spending a relaxing day of chit chat, maybe some yoga and a morning run, and of course my coffee stop, it would have to culminate in a freshman FroYo run, on bikes, of course.

Anything you're 'addicted to' or spend a lot of time doing?

I am addicted to coffee. I work way better sitting at my computer with my headphones on in a coffee shop than I do sitting in a silent library. I have a coffee maker in my tiny two-room triple!

Describe something you're NOT good at.

I am absolutely terrible at hiding my emotions. I have the widest array of facial expressions anyone has ever seen. The posters in kindergarten classrooms that have drawings of people's faces depicting certain emotions might as well be photographs of me. The combination of the emotions I actually feel, the faces I have, and the voices I use could easily turn me into a one-woman show. I would watch it and laugh. Maybe my friends would too. And my parents would understand. But in reality, everyone else might just think I'm a crazy person ;)
