BOSTON - The Washington crew will send both a men's and women's varsity eight across the country this weekend to compete in the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Both boats will race Sunday, Oct. 19.

The Head of the Charles is the world's largest two-day rowing event and was first held on Oct. 16, 1965. Initially organized by a group of three Cambridge (Mass.) Boat Club members, the regatta has grown to include over 7,500 athletes from around the globe. The two-day regatta hosts 55 different race events and draws crowds upwards of 300,000.

The course starts at the Boston University Boathouse and goes under the B.U. Bridge and a railroad trestle bridge. Crews then proceed through five triple-arch bridges (River Street Bridge, Western Ave. Bridge, Weeks Footbridge, Lars Anderson Bridge and Eliot Bridge) to the finish line, approximately three miles upstream in nearby Cambridge, Mass.

Washington last sent crews to the Head of the Charles in 2006, when the men's eight captured silver in the Championship Eights, trailing only the U.S. National Team. The women's eight took sixth place, finishing fourth among NCAA teams.

This season, the men's eight will row first at 1:08pm (PT) on Sunday and the women follow at 1:23pm (PT). The men's race features 37 boats including crews from all eight Ivies, Wisconsin, Pac-10 rival California, Boston University and crews from France, the Netherlands, England, Spain, Japan and Turkey. The women's eight will join a field of 38 crews, including seven Ivy League crews, the national teams of both the U.S. and Canada, American university crews from Tennessee, Stanford, Michigan and Navy and crews from England and the Netherlands.
